As the Broker-in-Charge of your firm, it’s important that you stay up to date on industry hot topics, best practices and work to reduce risk every step of the way.  Join us for an information packed session with Janet Thoren, Legal Counsel and Director of the Regulatory Affairs Division of the North Carolina Real Estate Commission, as she discusses tools, techniques and proactive strategies to stay ahead of risk and avoid complaints with the North Carolina Real Estate Commission.

A Fayetteville native, Janet is a graduate of Pembroke State University and the University of North Carolina School of Law, where she received her JD degree in 1988. Upon graduation, she joined a Hillsborough law firm, where she specialized in residential and commercial real estate transactions. Janet started her career at the North Carolina Real Estate Commission in 1997. As Legal Counsel and Director of Regulatory Affairs, she oversees the Commission’s legal and investigative functions, prosecutes complaints before the Commission; conducts settlement negotiations of contested cases; responds to inquiries relating to the License Law, Commission rules, and real estate transactions generally.  Between 2005 and 2019, she served as a Special Assistant United States Attorney in the Western District of North Carolina, where she assisted the FBI and US Attorney’s Office with mortgage fraud cases. She is the 2025 President of the Association of Real Estate License Law Officials, the international association for real estate boards and commissions.
