Through expert-led discussions, attendees will gain valuable insights into topics including heirs' property, wills, trusts and estates, financial planning strategies, and the critical role these tools play in preserving homeownership and generational wealth. The program will also examine fair housing considerations when working with clients with disabilities and those with special needs, equipping Realtors® with the knowledge to provide more inclusive, accessible, and ethical service.

  • Session 1: Estate Planning Essentials: Helping Protect Property and Generational Wealth
    • Attorney Claudia Soto, Soto Law Firm, will provide Realtors® with a practical overview of estate planning and its role in protecting and preserving generational wealth. Attendees will learn about essential estate planning documents, common issues that can affect the ownership and transfer of assets, including real estate, and risks when there is no estate plan.
    • Presented by Claudia Soto, NC Attorney/Owner, Soto Law Firm 
       
  • Session 2: Understanding Heirs' Property and Protecting Generational Wealth
    • Learn how heirs’ property can affect families, homeownership, and the transfer of real estate from one generation to the next. Attorney Thomas Mitchell, property law scholar and principal drafter of the Uniform Partition of Heirs Property Act (UPHPA), will explain the challenges associated with heirs’ property, strategies for protecting and preserving family-owned real estate, and what Realtors® should know to better recognize and understand these issues when working with clients.

  • Session 3: The Four Cornerstones of Financial Planning - Building & Protecting Your Wealth
    • Just as every strong home starts with a solid foundation, so does your financial future. This session will focus on getting your financial house in order through four key cornerstones—cash management, protection, investments, and tax and estate planning—and how they work together to help you build, protect, and preserve wealth for today, tomorrow, and the next generation.
    • Presented by Blanche Cheeley, RICP®, Prudential Advisors
          
  • Q& A with Panel of Experts: Moderated by Joan B. Goode
    • Representatives from leading industry organizations, including Asian Real Estate Association of America (AREAA), National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB), LGBTQ+ Real Estate Alliance, and National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP) will share insights on the impact their organizations are making within the real estate industry. 
  • Session 4: Effective Communication by the Division of Services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing
    • This session provides Realtors® with practical strategies for delivering accessible and inclusive service to Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing clients. Topics include communication preferences and working with sign language interpreters.
    • Presented by the Division of Services for The Deaf and The Hard of Hearing, NC Department of Health and Human Services
       
  • Session 5: Windows Into Vision Loss
    • Learn practical strategies for providing an accessible and inclusive real estate experience for clients with vision loss. This session will discuss common terms and concepts surrounding the spectrum of vision loss as well as etiquette and best practices for interacting with clients who have vision impairment. We will also share information on accessible communication, desirable home features, and community resources.
    • Presented by Susan King, Director of Vision Rehabilitation Services, and Erica Batten, Mobility Management Program Coordinator, Metrolina Association for the Blind, Inc.

  • Canopy Realtor® Association members (primary and secondary members) – no charge; however, a $50 no-show fee will be assessed for no-shows who do not cancel before the event (by Oct. 26).
  • All other attendees – $50 (Participants may cancel two (2) business days before the event (Oct. 26) for a refund of $50. After the deadline, the registration fee cannot be refunded.)
  • This event is intended for adult attendees only. Children will not be permitted to attend.
